WHEREFORE, BE NOT WEARY IN WELL-DOING

I have been thinking a lot about the scripture in doctrine covenants 64: 33 and in Galatians 6: 9 in the Bible.  In fact I have given a talk on the subject recently in church.  “Wherefore, be not weary in well-doing, for ye are laying the foundation of a great work. And out of small things proceedeth that which is great.”  (Doctrine & Covenants 64:33)  “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”  (Galatians 6:9 in the Bible)

The scriptures are referring to the building of the Kingdom of God but it also could be referring to our individual lives, our progress toward the great plan of salvation.  This is the great work of our Father in Heaven and Jesus Christ.

“For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.” (Moses 1:39 in the Pearl of Great Price)

Out of small things proceed with that which is great, the daily decisions, actions and disciplines form our character.  For example we attend church each week to:

  • Worship the Lord
  • We renew our covenants as we partake of the Sacrament
  • Repent of sins and mistakes made during the week and try harder
  • Lift others that are suffering from a difficult week
  • Welcome new members that are there for the first time
  • A chance to discuss the Gospel of Jesus Christ, its doctrine and commitments and the application in our lives.

Keep the Commandments of God

“Keep all the commandments of God, knowing that they are given to bless His children and bring them joy.   Warn them that they will encounter people who pick which commandments they will keep and ignore others that they choose to break. I call this the cafeteria approach to obedience. This practice of picking and choosing will not work. It will lead to misery. To prepare to meet God, one keeps all of His commandments.  It takes faith to obey them, keeping His commandments will strengthen that faith.  And remember, God’s holy angels are ever on call to help us. The Lord so declared: ‘I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up.’  (Doctrine & Covenants 84:88). What a promise! When we are faithful, He and His angels will help us.  God will heed your sincere and heartfelt prayers, and your faith will be strengthened.”  (Russell M. Nelson, ‘Face the Future with Faith’, May 2011 in Liahona Magazine)

Personal Experience

When I was a young leader in the church, I was asked to conduct and speak at the funeral of a young man that was tragically killed in a car accident.  I felt so inadequate to perform this responsibility.  As I was seated on the stand I felt so alone, scared and uninspired praying earnestly in my heart that the Lord would help me.  Just a few minutes before I addressed the large group of people assembled, the Spirit came over me with such power that I physically felt the divine power and when I spoke, my words just flowed through me to the gathered funeral group.  The Spirit stayed with me for about 3 hours after and it was a marvelous spiritual experience I will always remember as one of the great blessings in my hour of need.  We should all look for the of the Lord in our lives to strengthen our faith and thank the Lord for them. If we will do this, the blessings will keep coming,
